Editorial:
The political declaration of the 2016 United Nations General Assembly high-level meeting on antimicrobial resistance was a major milestone for the global #Antimicrobialresistance response. However, while it galvanized political action in areas with specific commitments, major gaps remain. AMR contributed to around five million deaths in 2019, a number that is almost certainly increasing each year as drug-resistant infections emerge and spread. If we are to get ahead of the urgent and critical public health problems posed by AMR, all relevant players must do more and faster. The UN General Assembly high-level meeting on AMR in 2024, together with the Fourth Ministerial Conference on AMR which will be hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, offers a unique opportunity. Bold, tangible and specific commitments are needed, including on financing and targets, to reinvigorate and accelerate action in countries. Now is the time to lay the groundwork so this opportunity is fully seized.
